"Raven" is an original, one of a kind large gourd ceremonial rattle.
A gourd hollowed and cleaned and filled with dried bean give this rattle an
impressive sound. Another smaller gourd was used for the beak. There is a metal
rod from the yucca stem through the rattle to the top of the gourd. This
insures that it can be used as a ceremonial rattle and not just as decoration.
Deerskin is wrapped around the handle. A hanging loop at the back allows the
rattle to be hung as a decoration when not in use.
Apoxie Sculpt clay was used for contouring the beak & eyes. Apoxie Sculpt is a
2 part air-dry clay. I work in small batches adding detail a little at a time.
In my climate, Apoxie Sculpt has a small working window of 2 hours, so I mix a
batch, apply, detail, let dry and begin again, and again until I get the
desired results.
Ravens are not pure or flat black. In the sun you will see an iridescent sheen
of several colors with a black overtone. I used acrylic paint. I started with
black matte, then black metallic. Next I added iridescent washes in green, blue
and purple. Finally using a black metallic wash to subdue the iridescent colors
and give the Raven Feather an illusion of being black. Finally, two coats of a
satin acrylic sealer.
Measurements:
* Length: 17-1/2"
* Width at the widest point: 4-3/4"back of head width
* Depth at the widest point: 9-1/2" front of beak to back of head
